Reading Stats in the US and Tips for Encouraging Reading

May 25, 2016: According to recent reports, the United States is ranked 24th out of 65 countries in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). This fact and several others create a grim picture of the state of reading in the U.S.

Due to this and other alarming statistics, savings website Couponbox.com decided to help parents and students by creating a useful and important infographic featuring six research-proven methods to encourage reading in the nation’s youth.

The Grim Stats of Reading

Approximately 66 percent of 8th graders were “below proficient” in reading according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

But the stats are not restricted to young readers. 27 percent of American adults have not read a book in the past year, and 54 percent read fewer than six books per year according to Pew Research.

Luckily, this is not an irreversible situation. Parents and teachers can help to encourage reading in students using proven methods.

Proven Methods to Encourage Reading

Reading to children is a great, proven way to encourage reading. According to the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report, 83 percent of children in all age groups report that they love when their parents read to them.

Letting children choose their own books is also a proven method to encourage reading. 91 percent of children aged six to 17 reported that their favorite books are those they pick out themselves according to Pew Research.
