May 8, 2016: According to research by Couponbox.com, the cost of being a stay-at-home mom is approximately $119,606 per year. The study was conducted by analyzing data published by Salary.com and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The research revealed that stay-at-home moms perform the duties of more than 50 different professionals from chauffeur to psychotherapist. Not only do these jobs cost mothers a lot of money (more than double the national median income), they also costs them a lot of time.
Being a Mom Costs Time
Mothers perform these unpaid tasks for up to 96.5 hours per week. That’s 141 percent more hours than the standard work week of 40 hours. These extra hours would normally be paid at an overtime rate of one and a half times regular pay. However, moms are paid nothing for these extra hours.
Depending on the city, the cost of being a mom can be even higher. For example, in New York City, the cost rises to $137,643. The cost of being a mom in San Francisco tops the charts at $147,517.
Being a Mother Is Priceless
Naturally, mothers don’t mind the work they do and would never give up being a mom for money. However, the cost of being a mom should put our mothers’ sacrifices into perspective.
The next time you get the urge to complain about your mom’s nagging, no matter how old you get, remember that your mom is priceless.
