But Not This Year
For that, you’ll have to wait until 2017.
Every year, Apple has a product launch in the beginning of September. And every year, the rumor mill churns out enough “could-bes” and “might-bes” to last us until the next launch.
2016 is no different.
There has been a huge amount of hype surrounding the upcoming event. The biggest Apple analysts and so-called “leakers” have made their predictions. However, there is only one thing that is confirmed:
There is a keynote event tomorrow, September 7th, in San Francisco.
And that’s all we know for sure.
The get the truth about the latest Apple products being launched tomorrow, including what most believe will be the newest version of the iPhone, all you need to do is wait and be patient.
However, for those of you who are on the edges of your seats and are dying for information about the new iPhone, we have compiled the following list of the most likely features of the most anticipated product release of the year.
Launch and Release, Keynote Event
Live streaming of the keynote event will take place on September 7th, 10am PDT. It will be held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco and is invitation only. Preorder may be available as early as September 9th, and most likely the official release will occur between September 16th and September 30th.
Although most believe that the new phone will be called the iPhone 7, other names on the tips of the media’s lips are the iPhone 6SE and the iPhone Pro.
Arguably, the most significant and hyped change to the iPhone will be the theoretical removal of the 3.5-mm audio jack. According to several strong leaks, the new iPhone will ship with Lightning-connected headphones and a Lightning to earphone adapter.
A second speaker may replace the audio jack, creating stereo sounds possibilities. An enhanced earpiece which can act as a speaker when phone is held in landscape will also possibly provide stereo sound.
The launch is also supposed to feature the introduction of the AirPods, Apple’s trademarked wireless earphones. Purportedly, the iPhone 7 Plus will ship with Airpods.
There has been some speculation about the possibility of new Apple Beats headphones made specifically for iPhone, featuring Bluetooth or a Lightning cable or both.
The rumored camera flash upgrade will double to the number of LED flashes to four. They are to feature two cool colors and two warm colors. An ambient light sensor is expected to be added to improve image quality.
The 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus may feature two 12-MP lenses, one wide-angle and the other telephoto. However, the smaller 4.7-inch iPhone 7 will have 12-MP camera but not a dual-lens.
These enhancements are supposed to provide the phone with the ability to take SLR-quality photos and 3D images.
There is the possibility on both phones for a protruding camera.
The biggest rumor about how people will input commands into the next iPhone have to do with its iconic home button.
Some rumors have it that the button will be removed altogether, while other state that it will become a pressure-sensitive button with haptic feedback, similar to that of the current 3D Touch sensor.
Still, the best predictions say that we will be stuck with the home button until further updates.
There have been many conflicting predictions about the new line of available colors for the iPhone. Most agree that Apple will discontinue Space Gray and introduce Dark Black and Piano black.
Others predict more colors including a blue or purple hue. A space black, to match the Apple Watch finishes is likely to be introduced. What seems to be certain is that there will be at least five colors: a dark shade of matte black, a glossy piano black and the previous silver, gold and rose gold options.
Prices: Phones and Accessories
Many predictions claim that prices will stay the same as those of the iPhone 6. Since the phone’s features are to increase, this means that the iPhone is getting cheaper without dropping in price points.
This continuation of older prices may be due to the fact that many customers have expressed frustration at the removal of the 100-year-old standard 3.5mm audio jack.
It means that there will be additional costs for accessories, namely Lightning-connected earphones. Current pricing on Lightning headphones range from $50 to $799.
Current iPhone 6 Pricing
iPhone 6: from $549; iPhone 6 Plus: from $649; iPhone 6s: from $649; iPhone 6s Plus: from $749.
If the above-mentioned rumors are true, then the new iPhone will follow this pricing.
Other “leaked prices” are the following, based on storage capacity:
32 GB –$790
128 GB –$910
256 GB –$1,060
iPhone 7 Plus
32 GB –$910
128 GB –$1,030
256 GB –$1,180
Speaking of storage capacity, rumors have it that the 16-GB version of the iPhone will be discontinued. Only 32, 128 and 256 GB will be available.
As usual, most predictions state that there will be no miroSD card port for upgrading storage capacity.
This should come as no surprise. The next iPhone will most likely be the first one to be launched running the iOS 10.
However, since nothing has been confirmed, a new iOS is not out of the question. It’s simply unlikely.
Current A9 processors are rumored to be ditched in favor of the faster A10 processors, which can clock up to 2.45 GHz, though system features may slow that down.
A dual or quad core chip is also a distinct possibility.
A serious upgrade in RAM compared to the iPhone 6, the 5.5-inch version of the new iPhone is likely to have 3 GB of RAM and the smaller 4.7-inch model, 2 GB of RAM.
The latest iPhone is expected by many to feature a True Tone-branded display technology, as on the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.
Screen resolutions are expected to be 1080p on the 4.7-inch model and 2K on the 5.5-inch.
The overall appearance of the iPhone is not expected to change, though it has been speculated back and forth for months whether or not the phone’s antenna lines will be removed.
According to most predictions, the lines will stay, but will perhaps be reduced.
The current iPhone is slightly water resistant, but not up to par with competition.
The rumor is that the newest version will be IPX7 water resistant, which generally means that water will not be able to enter the device’s enclosure if submerged under one meter of water for less than 30 minutes.
There have been some predictions about fast-charging technology and a slightly bigger battery on the latest iPhone, though they are thought to be insignificant.
What Happens to the iPhone 6?
The iPhone 6 may be discontinued or reduced in price. A considerable discount, though unlikely, will make it a much more attractive option than before.
For those who want to save money, a discounted iPhone 6 would be an ideal choice.
The iPhone 6 currently comes with the phone, Apple EarPods with remote and mic, Lightning to USB cable and a 5W USB power adapter.
